You’ve heard the puns, seen the neon t-shirts, own every brace in the book, had one too many muffin smoothie tournament breakfasts, and most likely have a gym bag covered in enough ribbons to put a cheerleader to shame. You’re a volleyball player, or were at some point. You know the ins and outs of a court, understand that a 5-1 and a 6-2 have nothing to do with height, and, as the many t-shirts gracefully put it, “Volleyball isn’t a sport. It’s a way of life.” I know you’ve seen and are probably sick of the “Volleyball Player Probs” memes, twitter accounts, quotes, etc. So I figured who better to ~be there for you~ than a couple of your “Friends”. (*Insert whistle blow*)
1. When your team finds the hole in the other team’s block.
2. When your team gives you a hard time for losing the coin toss, again.
3. When you come to terms with the fact that your volleyball thighs are never going away.
4. When you’re forced to buy a new bag with your uniform.
5. When your teammates scream-cheer for you after an ace.
6. When you want to rip the ref a new one, but must remain calm for the sake of the scoreboard. 7. When you get picked to be a line judge, and can already feel the wrath of helicopter parents taking things too seriously. 8. When you forget your warm-ups.9. When the other team blocks a hit, and comes at your team with an “Access Denied” cheer.
10. When you walk away for one second, and host team has cleared the table of your only food for the day.11. When your usual warm-up partner ditches you for someone else.
12. When your whole body hurts after 12+ hour days, in a week long tournament.13. When you realize how much this game means to you, even after you’ve stopped playing.14. When it’s all over, but you’re not fully ready to let go.When all's said and done, even if you didn’t love the game half as much as the people you played it with, volleyball will always be apart of who you are. You spent so much of your life learning the game and “perfecting” your skills, it may seem odd to just walk away from it all. But regardless of how it all played out, volleyball was good to you, and hopefully you were good to it.
