This past Thursday, Nintendo unveiled their next line of home consoles. For gamers this was just a matter of time. Nintendo had been teasing their next generation under the code-name "NX" for well over a year prior to it's announcement. However, it's safe to assume that the general public didn't set aside the time to track this project from its idea phase to where it is now. So for those of you who are too busy, here's a quick play-by-play of what the Nintendo Switch is and what makes it so unique.
The major selling point of the Nintendo Switch is it's portability. While it is a home console for the entire family to enjoy on the TV Christmas morning, it's also a portable device you can take on the go. Previously, home gaming systems have been limited in that you could only play at home, and playing on the go was never really an option unless you bought a separate portable system. For many people, portable systems were the only option because they have busy schedules and couldn't budget time to play video games at home. However, even if you bought a portable system, it more than likely didn't feature the same game library as the home system did. So you wouldn't be able to play the games you wanted on the go anyway. Nintendo has innovated to remedy this issue by making the home console a tablet that can either be plugged into the TV for a more traditional experience, or taken with you if you want to continue playing while you're out and about. This means that you no longer have to worry about not being able to continue playing, or deal with the hassle of portable systems that don't even boast the same library as the home console.
Not much is known about the system beyond the concept. However the trailer did show off the system running popular games such as Mario Kart and Splatoon. The Nintendo Switch is projected to launch in March of 2017 alongside The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. So it would likely make a perfect Christmas gift for any of your nerdy gamer friends.
