Planning Ahead: Your New Year’s Resolution

Each year, millions of people promise themselves things on December 31st and want to keep that promise throughout the upcoming year, but for most people who make resolutions…they normally aren’t kept. Last year, my resolution was to start going to the gym. Less than 6 months later, that membership was cancelled and I told myself I’d start again in 2017. There are a lot of reasons I didn’t keep my resolutions and I want to avoid those mistakes again next year.

I believe that we as a society hold New Year resolutions way too high. We beat ourselves up when we don’t achieve them, and I don’t think that’s right. Each week, I make little goals for myself. That goal might be ‘go to grocery store and pick up paper towels’. Some weeks I may achieve that goal and other weeks I may not. On the weeks I don’t achieve my goal, I don’t sit on my couch and feel bad for myself…so why do we do that to our non-achieved New Year resolutions?

This year, my resolution for New Years is to not have one. Yep, you read that correct, I will not be having a New Years resolution. I’m eighteen and I just want to live my life! I don’t want to pay a monthly fee to a gym I won’t go too because in my heart of hearts, I know I won’t go to the gym even if I made it my resolution to shed 10 pounds by June of 2017. I don’t want to make a resolution that I know I won’t keep, so I just won’t make one. I’m happy with my decision and I definitely plan on keeping it that way!

If you chose to have a New Years resolution this year, good for you! If you don’t achieve that goal by the mid-point of 2017, don’t feel bad! A New Years resolution is just as important as a weekly resolution! Don’t hurt yourself to achieve the goal or blow out your entire savings! Be wise and responsible and make sure that you are happy with your resolution. Entering a New Year is supposed to be fun and stress free, you are supposed to drop the stress of the previous year and go into the New Year brand new. Don’t shape your resolution over last year’s issues, and don’t enter the New Year worrying about last year’s news! Happy New Year!

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
