Abortion is one of the touchiest subjects of discussion in our country today. People argue continuously about whether or not a woman should be able to terminate her pregnancy. Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that offers information and advice about contraceptives, reproductive issues, as well as family planning. Some of the Planned Parenthood clinics across the country offer abortion services, and many citizens believe that the government funding for this organization should stop, for this reason alone. It was stated by the Republican Party that they would be forcing a government shutdown if the funding for Planned Parenthood had not been stopped by then, Planned Parenthood gets about $500 million a year from the United States government.
The organization caught many people’s attention after being seen discussing the donation of fetal tissues that came from aborted babies in order to assist research further for different health problems and conditions. With all this commotion and public talk of abortion clinics, a lot of citizens are forgetting about the other major and important services this group provides. By providing assistance with things such as birth control, and other contraceptives to women who are in need, as well as giving a helping hand to new coming parents that may need some help in going down the right direction for their baby. These services allow those that are suffering financially to receive a fair chance at proper and necessary health care.
A shutdown in funding of this organization will shut down the primary source of its income, and it is difficult for people to see how Planned Parenthood will even exist after that kind of budget cut. It has been said that by defunding Planned Parenthood there would be around 2.6 million women going without proper health care. This, in turn, would then lead to a spike in unplanned pregnancies and births, because of the lack of access to proper birth control. The risk for life-threatening and more dangerous methods of abortion would then rise as well because women would not have an opportunity to go to a safe environment that is clean and professional.
With there being so many different points of view on this subject, it can be hard to decide what actually the right thing to do is, and what is not. Not everyone will agree on what that is, but hopefully issues such as this one can be solved in a way that cannot and does not potentially damage our government or our civil rights as United States citizens, as well as human beings.
