"There is no place like Nebraska."
This is phrase you'll hear many proud Nebraskans, like myself, say. It's for good reason, too. Nebraska is not only my home, but it has a rich history with numerous places that show the beauty and grace of this great state. Nebraska is a fantastic state to visit, so here are 12 places, in no particular order, that you must see while in Nebraska. Why 12 you may ask? Because, like The Nostalgia Critic, "I like to go one step beyond."
1. Scottsbluff Monument in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
The name coming from the fur trader who died in 1828 by the bluffs, Hiram Scott, Scottsbluff has been mentioned multiple in diaries and journals from emigrants heading west in the nineteenth century. Serving as a landmark for many diverse individuals and towering 800 feet above the North Platte River with a summit of 4,659 feet, you are able to see approximately 100 miles.

2. Old Market in Omaha, Nebraska.
In a neighborhood in downtown full of arts and entertainment, Omaha, Nebraska, the Old Market is chockablocked with many stores and restaurants that will be sure to please you are around every corner. In the 1880s, the Old Market flourished and was essential for the development of Omaha. What makes the Old Market so intriguing are the brick warehouses, quaint storefronts, old-fashioned lampposts, uneven brick streets, horse-drawn carriages and street-side musicians.
3. The Haymarket in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Omaha is not the only place that has a historic market. In downtown Lincoln, Nebraska lies the Historic Haymarket, a market square than can actually be traced back to Lincoln's first decade of birth. In the summer time, the Haymarket comes to life in the morning to late afternoon with vendors and farmers of all sorts.

4. The Platte River Archway Monument in Kearney, Nebraska.
One of my favorite places, the Great Platte River Road Archway tells the story of the trails and rails and highways that ran along the Great Platte River Road which spurred the westward expansion of the United States. It pays tribute to the spirit the pioneers who ventured bravely in their trek across America.
5. The Niobrara River in Valentine, Nebraska.
If you like tubing, kayaking, and canoeing, then this river is calling your name. It's great for a couple of hours floating down the river, watching nature pass by. There are also a few waterfalls around the area that are ideal for the perfect selfie. Many visitors camp overnight in various private campgrounds operated by individual outfitters, or at the campground in Smith Falls State Park, which make an excellent weekend trip.

6. St. Cecilias Cathedral in Omaha, Nebraska.
If you are a church person or not, Catholic or not, St. Cecilias Cathedral is still a must see. Coming from a guy who had the privilege to sing in there during our tour of the cathedral, this place is beyond magnificent. The cathedral and the familiar two towers are built on the highest points of the city with the monumental structure catching the first light of sunrise. Its facade and west towers reflect the gorgeous sunset.

One of the lesser known trademarks of Nebraska that people tend to overlook is the countless small town diners and restaurants all across the state. 10. Chimney Rock near Bayard, Nebraska.
Have you ever seen the movie "Holes"? You remember the part with the mountain rock that was dubbed as God's Thumb? That is exactly what I think of when I see Chimney Rock. This Nebraska landmark still looks like it did back in the early nineteenth century. Along with Scotts Bluff Memorial, Chimney Rock has been mentioned in over 300 journal accounts. Throughout the ages, the rock spire has continued to capture the imaginations and the romantic fascinations of travelers heading west.

11. Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska.
This is the pride and joy of all Nebraska and the home of the Huskers who proudly wear the scarlet and cream. Not just having the longest ticket sell-out streak, the legendary sea of red will fill you up with wonder. The stadium tour in itself is enough to impress the non-believers, but it's football game day that really makes it the most impressive. A home football game in Memorial Stadium is a must. You will not regret it.

12. Doane University in Crete, Nebraska.
When the sun is down, the moon is up, Merrill will ring. Now I might be a tad biased on this because it is my Alma Mater, but Doane University is place you have to visit. Student led tours and the most beautiful campus in Nebraska is just a few of the many top qualities Doane has to offer. It does not matter if you play sports or play music, you will find your place and make some of the best friendships and relationships ever in your four years there.
