Welcome to Santa Clara, where the sun is shining, the palm trees are swaying, and it’s the kind of weather that defines Claradise. I know we all want to be spending time outside in this gorgeous weather, so I’ve compiled a list of my favorite outdoor study spots so that you can study and still enjoy the sweet summer breeze. Happy studying!

1. Tables outside Library

It’s always a good day to study at the tables outside the library, and you’re lucky if you can catch an open seat. I love coming here to soak up the sunshine when it’s not too hot out. My only advice is to try not to get distracted by everyone passing by the tables, or else you will not get any work done! But at the same time, if you want a break from studying, this is a great place to people watch and you’re always bound to find someone you know passing by.

2. 3rd Floor Terrace Lounges in Library

Now this study space is inside but there’s an abundance of natural lighting which makes it feel like you’re outside. The terrace lounges provide the perfect space with open windows that allow for lots of natural lighting and fresh air during the day. You also have the option of either sitting down and working at the tables or lounging on the couch, like you’re at home in your family room. Tip: study here at sunset and the view is gorgeous.

3. Mission Gardens

One of the prettiest spots on campus, I still can’t get over how beautiful Santa Clara is each time I come here. Tip: Bring a blanket to lay down on and spread it out on the grass. You’re sure to get plenty of sunshine, garden views, and peace here. Just try not to get too distracted by the beauty of our campus while studying!

4. 3rd Floor Terrace at Lucas Hall

This terrace is the perfect hideout for studying and has a picture- perfect view. Unlike the tables outside the library where it’s easy to get distracted by all the people passing by, the 3rd Floor Leavey Terrace located at Lucas Hall gives you the space and silence to focus on your work. It’s a good place if you want to be alone and pop in your headphones or if you want to work in a group and need a private space. Bonus: there’s seating in the shade, so you don’t have to worry about getting sunburnt or too hot while studying.

And the view...

5. Tables between Kenna Hall & Bergin Hall

Surrounded by roses and plants overhead, this cozy alcove has about five tables and is tucked off to the side, so it’s easy to be in your own world while SCU students pass by. It’s the perfect spot for studying alone while still in a central location on campus.

6. Benches outside Kenna Hall

Sit on the benches and lean against the posts while reading a book or working from your laptop. I’d recommend studying here in the afternoons after 2pm as there tends to be less people passing by and therefore, less noise. Expect a light breeze and to get lots of work done!

7. Casa Terrace

With views of Bellomy Field and planes taking off from the San Jose Airport, the Casa Terrace is the perfect spot for Casa residents who feel like studying outdoors within the comfort of their dorm. It’s a private space, and students who don’t live in Casa might be unaware of its existence. Time to make a friend in Casa so you can study on their terrace!

8. Tables by Bronco Grill

Located just outside the Bronco Grill next to the bookstore, most students walk out of Benson passing these tables on their right without a second glance. These tables are the perfect hideaway if you want to study in serenity with zero distractions. Heads up: the noise level depends on the people around you. During lunch, expect some chatter, but if you’re focused, it’s easy to get lost in your studies. Bonus: the tables are located right next to Benson, so it’s easy to take a study break and get some food, AND the flowers above make for a pretty amazing overhang.

Hopefully, I gave you all some new, fun, and productive places to study. Good luck this quarter!

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

Actually, Kylie Jenner, 2018 is the year of realizing things.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?

6 Unrealistic Expectations Society Has For Young Adults

Don't let the thesaurus-inspired vocabularies in our résumés fool you. We're actually just big kids.

Well over four feet tall and 100 pounds in weight, many of us "young adults" of the world still consider ourselves children. Big, working, college-attending, beer-drinking children. We may live on our own, know how to cook noodles, and occasionally use a planner, but don't be fooled; the youthful tendencies that reside within us still make their way into our daily lives. From choosing to stay up until 3:00 a.m. playing video games on a school night to going out in 30 degree weather without a coat, we still make decisions that our parents and grandparents would shake their heads at in disappointment. So why are we expected to know exactly how to be a wise, professional, sensible adult? It's not that we're irresponsible (for the most part, anyway). It's that we are young, inexperienced, and still have the sought-after, enthusiastic mentality that we can do and be whatever we want, which has not yet been tarnished by the reality of the world. These are just a few of the unrealistic expectations that society has for young adults.
