Places To Find A Great Halloween Costume

Halloween is the best holiday of the year. Sure, Christmas is pretty great, and you do get to eat some tasty stuff on Thanksgiving. Halloween, however, has it all: candy, movies to set the spooky mood and unique costumes.

Costumes are probably the best part of Halloween. You can dress up as anything you want. Picking out a costume can be hard, though. Some are too expensive, some do not fit very well and some you cannot find at a costume or party store.

Have no fear! That does not mean your desired costume is no where to be found. There are other ways of acquiring it.

1. Your Closet

Not up for leaving the comfort of your home and driving somewhere? Not a problem. Your own closet may have something for you to throw together as a costume. Use that sweater your granny gave you for your birthday a few years ago that is stashed in the very back of your closet. Then, pair it with a skirt, cute glasses and tie your hair in a bun. Ta da! You are a librarian.

2. The Thrift Store

It is true what they say: another man's trash is another man's treasure. The thrift store has anything you need. From clothes, to shoes, to toys, to books, you will always find what you need. Put together a nice suit that is only five dollars in total and that old briefcase that is settled between those two suitcases. Look! You are Atticus Finch (or just a plain lawyer).

3. Yard Sales

Apply what you learned from tip number two. Your options are limited with yard sales, but that should not stop you! You never know what you will end up with. If your neighbor is selling their old scrubs, snatch them up. You are now a Grey's Anatomy character. Good luck not making too many people cry on Halloween this year.

4. The Laundry Room

A white sheet with some holes cut out of it will turn you into a cute Casper the Friendly Ghost. It is simple, but very effective. If you want to get extra creative with it, get a book to hold. You are now a ghost writer! (This is the part where you laugh.)

5. Yourself

No, this is not a funny opportunity for me to make a joke about you being scary enough for a Halloween costume. Going as yourself is actually great idea. Why? Because you are so unique, and no one else can be you like you can. I mean, unless your younger brother decides to go as you for Halloween, but he will more than likely be a Power Ranger, annoying or something like that. You are your own costume. You own everything to be you. Your clothes, voice, shoes, everything.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
