For many years now cities all over the world have been putting a ban on Pit Bulls. In the U.S alone there are approximately 937 cities that have put Breed Specific Laws (BSL) on Put Bulls. Worldwide 41 countries have BSL's and most recently Montreal, Canada passed a law banning this breed. This has been going on for quite a while and not just with pit bulls, Dobermans' were blamed in the 70's, German Shepherds' in the 80's, Rottweiler's in the 90'ws and now it has been passed to the pit bulls.Miami stated that they put a ban because of the dogs "inbred propensity to attack other animals" which is a statement that has no scientific backing and no proof. The behavior to attack another dog or person can be "inbreeded" in all dogs but we don't know that for certain. We have bred them to be able to preform many different task and hey have been made into domesticated pets. Another way to look at this is that this behavior could in fact be a learned behavior. We have bred dogs to be a "mans best friend" which was not "inbred" to them, meaning that you can breed a dog to be vicious and mean and attack anything in site. This in fact happens quite a lot with this breed. Pit bulls are known fighting dogs because of all the people out there training them to be fight dogs and that's the real issue. The breed doesn't matter, how the dog goes through life does. This can be compared to abusive humans. If a kid grew up in a certain environment that had lots a violence they are more likely to become violent themselves, so why do people have a hard time seeing that this is the same way for dogs.
These bans are causing a lot more damage than you see. All the Pit bulls that are in the cities shelters will be euthanized because they are not allowed to be adopted out. Not only are many of these animals being killed but the owners of this breed have to go through many obstacles just to be able to keep their pets. In Montreal, for example, the owners must pay a $150 fine along with many other conditions that most other cities have. these are having the animal microchipped along with being sterilized and vaccinated. The dogs must also be on a 4 foot leash (the size varies from city to city) and held by the owner, not tied to anything and they must be muzzled at all times while out in public. The dog must also be confined in a cage at all times that meets the requirements unless being held on a leash or inside the home. These dogs are having to be trained to wear a muzzle, put in cages and short leashes, and worst of all, thousands are being sent to their deaths because the blame is still being put on them even though they aren't the ones to be blamed. How could someone look at a puppy as adorable as the one bellow and label them as dangerous based upon other dogs who where raised to fight.
