Kids can be picky eaters. That makes it hard to be sure they're getting the vitamins they need, while avoiding sugary, fatty foods. But by introducing children to new and healthy foods at an early age, they are more likely to enjoy them and continue eating them when they get older. These recipes are a great way to get kids interested in trying new things and picking up healthy eating habits.
1. Ants on a log
- Celery sticks
- Peanut butter
- Raisins
This one's simple. Fill the groove of each celery stick with creamy peanut butter and top them off with raisins. I remember eating these as a kid and loved them!
2. Fruit/veggie rainbow
For the rainbow:
- Red: Strawberry, raspberry, red apple/red bell pepper, tomato
- Orange: Mandarin oranges/carrots, sweet potato
- Yellow: Pineapple, banana/butternut squash, corn
- Green: Kiwi/snap peas, cucumber, green beans
- Blue: Blueberry/blue cauliflower (if you can find it! It's okay to skip this one if need be)
- Purple: Grape, plum/eggplant, purple cabbage
For the clouds:
- Marshmallows/ranch dip
3. Flower eggs
- Red, yellow, green, and orange bell peppers (the curvier the better)- Eggs
- Salt and pepper
Slice the peppers horizontally and place them on the skillet. Then crack the eggs in the center of each pepper slice and cook them as you would regular sunny-side-up eggs. Then season!
4. Octodogs
- Hot dogs!
This one's also pretty simple. Take a hot dog and use a knife to split one end into eight strips. Then boil them as usual, and the legs will separate naturally.
5. Sandwich shapes
- Standard sandwich supplies (ham and cheese, tuna, peanut butter and jelly, etc.)
- Cookie cutters
Easy enough—prepare the sandwich and cut it using the cookie cutters to make cute designs that might encourage your little one to take a bite!
