On this Sunday, April 5, the brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha will be holding a firetruck pull to benefit the Atlanta Fire Foundation, a charity organization that assists firefighters in the Atlanta area. Pike is nationally associated with its red firetruck, which represents their commitment to assisting the brave firefighters that risk their lives to keep us safe. Nationally, the fraternity has been supporting the firemen for generations, dating as far back as the 1950s.
Chapters all across the nation host annual Fireman's Challenges and firetruck pulls, helping to contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars to firemen every year. This year, the brothers have already raised one thousand dollars to benefit the local firemen and they hope this event can increase their contribution. Philanthropy chair Graham Burke told us, “The pull is the least we can do to give back to the heroic men and women of the Atlanta Fire Department; they're all willing to pull people out of burning buildings, so I think we can manage to pull an engine and raise some money while we're at it."
The brothers are searching for sponsors. For every five dollars donated, the brothers will pull the firetruck one foot. Also, there will be a friendly presidential competition. Teams, captained by current president Thomas McClure and former president Grant Veve, will compete who can pull the truck faster. The losing team will have to perform a so-far secret, ridiculous task. The smack talk has already begun, and both gentlemen are preparing their teams for what is sure to be an intense race.
Besides this grand spectacle, the weather is forecasted to be spectacular, and brothers will provide free burgers and hot dogs. The event will also feature an appearance from the brave men of fire Sation 11, who directly oversee Georgia Tech campus. Remember, these are the guys that get called at 3 am when your burnt popcorn sets off a fire alarm in your dorm, so this is a great opportunity to thank them in person.
