Any plans for Monday and Tuesday night?

Phi Mu's Fall Philanthropy: Phright Night
Jennifer Portillo

I stepped outside this morning at 10 AM and guess what: it wasn’t burning hot. Now, I’m not gonna be one of those people and say “OMG it’s so cold woo let me wear boots and scarves and drink hot chocolate like it’s water,” but, I am gonna be one of those people that says, “FALL IS HERE Y”ALL!” With the temperature dropping a little and the holidays just around the corner, it’s time to bring on the festivities. Halloween is only the beginning of the best time of the year, so it’s necessary that we celebrate it the right way to preface these next few months. For the ladies of Phi Mu at Florida State University, this means the annual Phright Night event. Now, I may be biased, but this is an event you do not want to miss!

This year is Phi Mu’s second annual Phright Night event. Last year, this event was such a success that there was no way Phi Mu was going to stop there. Phright Night partners with Terror of Tallahassee to bring the 850 one of the most entertaining and most frightening haunted houses around. This year, the house will have three sections: the first part is zombie themed, the second is an outside maze, and the third section is Purge themed. The actors in the haunted house are all Phi Mu sisters that will be dressed and disguised to scare all guests. After you're done with the maze, it doesn’t stop there. There are booths outside of the haunted house, from bake sales and free Z Baked cookies to pumpkin smashing and corn hole games, there is something for everybody to do. It’ll be a good way to take a quick break from the aftermath of midterms (or during midterms—bless you if you’re still going through it).

The best part about this event is that it is for the kids, meaning that a portion of our ticket sales go to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, Phi Mu’s national philanthropy. That’s right, it’s #FTK so if that’s not a reason to come then I don’t know what is. For those that don’t know, CMNH raises funds and awareness for participating hospitals all over Canada and the USA that provide treatments for children in need. 62 children enter a CMNH for treatment every minute. Just to put things in perspective, every time you hear your favorite song on the radio, that’s approximately 3-5 children being admitted into one of these hospitals. Think of all the children we could be helping and supporting by attending this event. It gives me chills just thinking about it.

Phi Mu Phright Night will be held on October 24th and 25th at Terror of Tallahassee on 1408 Lake Bradford Road. Doors open at 7:30 and close at 10:30. Wanting to catch a ride there? No worries, Phi Mu has you covered. Phi Mu will have buses taking people to and from the haunted house. They will be looping around between centers A and B at the stadium from 7:30 to 10:30, that way you can just park your car at the stadium or walk over if you’re on campus or anywhere near. So come on by, socialize with friends, go through the house, (I even heard they have a raffle going on with prizes you DON’T want to miss) and open up this holiday season with a bang. Tickets are $10 from a sister, $15 dollars at the door, but the time you’ll have at Phi Mu’s Phright Night is priceless. FTK!

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
