Phoenix-heart

By Genevieve Joy Breitbach

did you know

tears are made of d i ff'rent stuff

when sprung from love

or forged in hate

?

I love

the way a human leaves liquid stars

dangling on the rise of their cheekbone

a breath longer when they’re happy

melting the molecules

into their flesh

healing hearts

from the inside out

it’s the magic potion from our salted blood -

a relief, a joy or curtain of disappointment

emotion

grinds away the Past

& pushes the present into ...……

Focus.

I love

the fresh spice of old wounds

thought lost,

when healing words are spoken, that tickle

awake

then seal together into wholeness;

oysters enclosing a new pearl of wisdom

that can take a breath of

sea water,

sprouting a mermaid tail to

swim the endless sea

of human emotion

there are those who don’t believe

someone can ever heal

their past

d o n ’ t listen to

those fools

that would have you believe you are nothing but a

roughhewn clod of

fleshy earth.

You are fluctuating endlessly—

A swarm of

being, soul, and mind

that transforms your body, your heart--

that glove your soul wears to brush

the earth...

for what terrifies them

is that you

A R E

C

H

A

N

G

E

Pure energy molecules bouncing

off chandelier

diamonds;

teardrops of the world

around you.

Each breath of forgiveness

Makes you whole.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
