Greek life in college is something that is so unique. Greek life is different at each school across the country, and that is something that's so cool about it. It is cool because you have this bond with people all over the country that is so unique, but you also have this special bond with the sisters/ brothers on your campus.
Greek life at any school can get some horrible stereotypes and usually they are not true. There is one aspect of Greek life that does not change at any school and that is the idea of philanthropy. It does not matter if you are the biggest school in the U.S. with Greek life, or the smallest, each Greek organization cares about their philanthropy. Also, they don't just care about their own they care about others.
This is a characteristic of Greek life that is extremely overlooked and shouldn't be. This past Saturday, my sorority held a volleyball tournament on campus for the Make a Wish Foundation. We raised $15,000 dollars which is enough to grant two wishes, which is something we are so proud about. We care so much about our philanthropy; we've dedicated so much work into this one event and it paid off. However, we don't owe it all to ourselves.
Every Greek organization on campus participated in our event. Some teams even had multiple teams. That right there to me is what Greek life is. I know that in the next month I am going to be partaking in so many philanthropic events because I care not only for the Make A Wish Foundation, but also for so many others that are represented on campus.
So the next time that you say that you think Greek life is crazy, that you hate it, that there really is no point to it, remember that this is just one of the many positive aspects of Greek life. I am so proud to be a part of Greek life and to do good everyday.
