Although we might spend a great deal of time complaining about attending our philanthropy events, we always end up having a great time at them. I would even go so far as to say philanthropy events might be my favorite part of Greek Life. Here's why:
Supporting A Good Cause
Lets get the obvious one out of the way first. It feels so great knowing that you are not only raising money, but you are also raising awareness. I had never heard of many of the organizations that various Greek houses support before I went Greek, but now I feel very knowledgeable about a wide range of charities. Greeks are known for only the negative stereotypes, but this is such a big  aspect of Greek life that often gets overlooked.Â
Frat Boys
Sober frat boys at that. Which is a refreshing change from the norm. It's awesome to have people from many different houses come together to support the same cause. Even more awesome than sober frat boys is friendly Panhellenic women. As sorority women, we sometimes have a tendency to view Greek life as a competition. That seems to go away while at philanthropy events. Of course we all think our house is the best, or why else would we be in it? But in the grand scheme of things, working together to help out a third-party cause is a much better investment than smack talking other sororities.Â
Bonding
Philanthropy events are a great way to spend time with a sorority sister that you might not know very well. Many times you will be grouped with girls outside of your regular circle of friends, which is great because it's really such a good experience. Not every girl will have the same interests in your sorority, but I'd be willing to bet that you are both interested in whatever your philanthropy is. Getting to laugh over whatever activity you are doing to raise money will bring you closer with your sisters.
Promotes Good Stereotypes
Although these types of things rarely make headlines, Greeks do more good than bad. Philanthropy events are the most outward of the good things that we do. Personally, I've been able to change the opinions of some of my family members just by talking about our philanthropy. It is something I'm passionate about, and I know I am not alone in this. Being so passionate about philanthropy is a clear reflection of Greek life and is something we should be proud of.Â
Philanthropy events might seem like the worst thing ever at 7Â a.m. on the Sunday morning it is scheduled for, but at the end of the (sometimes very long) day, you realize it is all totally worth it. It provides yet another reason for you to be proud of your decision to go Greek in the first place. And at the end of the day, isn't that what's most important?
