Philadelphia Fans Flustered: What Happened To Our Sports?

The 2017-2018 seasons left the city of Philadelphia with high hopes and psyched spirits. Unfortunately, the 2018-2019 seasons haven't met expectations.

Philadelphia was on fire – literally and figuratively. To sum it up, the Philadelphia Eagles brought home an outstanding win in Super Bowl 52, and the Villanova University Wildcats took fans' breath away with their 2018 Men's Basketball National Championship. Black, white, and midnight green bled throughout the city streets. Blue and white filled the sky. Parades, promotions, impromptu celebrations – it all seemed like it was never going to end. And, if you were a Philadelphian, nothing could dampen the festivities. Well, that's until these 2018-2019 seasons began to play out.

Let's take a look into exactly what's going on in the land of sports!

1. Phillies fans were real-life fanatics.

Having a great season, the Phillies were pulling fans along to what we all thought was going to be a spot in the 2018 World Series. They tugged on our heartstrings. Hard. The season quickly came crashing down with the Phillies ending third in the National League with a record of eighty wins and eighty-two losses. Hey! At least we finished on top of the Mets and the Marlins!

2. The Flyers are a flop.

The team came in giving fans a craze for what was to come next. We've got a full team of young studs. Young means quick, agile, smart. Fans seemed to forget, defense matters too. But for every home game this season, they've appeared to be MIA. This team needs to be pulled back together to offer fans hope for the continuing season. I mean, c'mon. I know we've got Gritty, but where's the grit?

3. Eagles lost their elegance.

From the top team in the NFL to a team with a losing record, and an embarrassing one at that, the Eagles have dramatically disappointed fans and bandwagoners alike. The Eagles hold a current record of three wins and four losses…not good. Fans, however, are still crossing fingers and toes in hopes to see a significant turnaround for this Philadelphia favorite. Heck! We know they still have the dreams and will never abandon their faith. You pretty much hear the Eagles fight song echoing everywhere you go…even Flyers games!

4. 76ers sting.

The team was promised to come in hot, but their performance thus far hasn't held up. The season is still very early, so hope is still strong. You can especially see this in the packed stands with Franklin the Dog bringing the hype. Let's hang on for now. I'm wishing for something big to come from these boys.

Ultimately, I may not be a native Philadelphian, but, as an avid sports fan, my heart is hoping for some hefty turnarounds for the season. Knowing the City of Brotherly Love, expectations won't be lowered, and we will all keep holding on. And, if need be, we'll all be putting our eggs in the Villanova basket to bring back the party. Keep your fingers crossed, folks!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
