The Phenomena Behind Pokémon Go

In just four days, the game has climbed the "Top Grossing" and "Free" charts making this one of the most memorable games of the summer.

The Phenomena Behind Pokémon Go

A new game for smart phones came out on July 6th 2016 called Pokémon Go sparking a revolution in video game playing. It's not your typical type of game. Pokémon Go gets players out of their house and travel to different locations in our real world to catch Pokémon. It has been very beneficial in a shorter amount of time.

It's free at the App Store.

Pokémon uses a lot of high-tech features like GPS which is why it's surprising that the game is free. But in the future, there will be another option with the game which is called Pokémon Go Plus where players can wear a blue-tooth type of device that includes LED display and light vibration. This is an extra charge.

The game encourages leaving the house to catch more Pokémon.

One thing that is very positive about the game is the fact that unlike other games, you use the world around you to play. Video games and games on smart phones usually keep people stuck inside and nowadays, kids aren't going outside to play. It branches out to learn your surroundings. But like other games, you have to keep your head down to see what's going on which can cause an unawareness of your surroundings.

There's already safety concerns...

On July 9th, Shayla Wigeons found a body floating in a nearby river in the state of Wyoming. It is implied that the death was accidental. The teenager was playing Pokémon Go when she discovered the body which has raised some concern for the safety. The game warns players that they should "Remember to be alert at all times. Stay aware of your surroundings." A lot of gamers have been playing while driving, walking around late at night, or driving to far locations just to catch certain Pokémon.

...including a highway accident.

CartelPress issued an article where they said that Lamar Hickson caused a highway accident because he was playing Pokémon Go. But once the article was released, it was found that it was false. Although it was meant to be funny, the article issue was not taken lightly. Drivers should not play the game while driving because things like this COULD actually happen. The hashtag #DontPokemonAndDrive has surfaced to Twitter reminding players to play safe.

But some car crashes have been close.

One player explains that driving is a special tool you can use when playing the game. "It's the way to do it, it really is." says YouTube user ScottTheOxytocinrobot 10. This user doesn't really understand the risk that can happen if you drive around while playing this game. Nothing happens in his video, but he, along with other gamers obviously take for granted that no major accidents have happened yet.

Here's the video:

Americans are ready to put themselves in serious danger to catch them all.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
