Somehow, despite being a Freshman I managed to earn myself a paid internship for the summer. It was unheard of where I came from and the fact that i had arranged it all myself turned heads. I had gone out of my way to go the extra mile. However, as I would later find out, the cubicle life was not all that glamorous. Just like any employee of any establishment, you go through phases. You start off all hyped up on coffee and ready to strut into the doorway of adulthood, but then it hits you that this is a real, serious job. Here are the phases of your first internship internship that no one tells you about:
1. Getting the Internship!
Yay! Look at me I'm getting a grown up job!
2.Decorating the cubicle and moving in
I'm only going to be here temporarily but lets' go all out!
3. Getting to introduce yourself to everyone in the office
Hey y'all! Whats up?
4. Getting your first task
Exciting! Exciting!
5.Realizing you're actually going to be really working
The GIF says it all.
6. Figuring out to how to do things
Um what's a spreadsheet? How do I make one? Is that in Microsoft?
7. Questioning everything
Why did I do this to myself? What's the password for the copy machine again? Why does the laminator hate me? How do I transfer calls?
9. Bonding with your coworkers and making friends
We're all in this together!
10. Realizing you're going to miss this place
Also, time to pack up all the junk I bought!
11. Getting your evaluation and recommendation letter
Now time to go back to school and continue to work hard!
My internship was an incredible experience. I learned so much but it still had it's ups and downs. I eventually made an alliance with the laminator after it tried to commit suicide while I was using it several times. I learned how to make spreadsheets and sound less awkward doing surveys and cold calls. I learned a lot more but let me save some details for the job interviews, guys (Wink, wink). I burned my feet and sweat off several pounds working outside events and mingled with some interesting people. I made this thing called a portfolio with some of the snippets I created that I can show potential employers. My coworkers became family and I value my experience and time I spent with them! I can't wait for my next adventure in the internship world! Whether it's with the same people or with a different company, at least my resume is a couple inches thicker!
