George W. Merck, a former vice president of Merck & Company, the pharmaceuticals manufacturer, once stated, “We try to remember that medicine is for the patient. We try never to forget that medicine is for the people. It is not for the profits.” It is true that the pharmaceutical industry was considered to be a very respectable and one of the largest industry in the United States. However, in the global market today, the pharmaceutical industry is considered to be storehouses of trouble due to the fact that the growth of consumer negativity such as the mistrust, has been dramatically increasing over the past decade if not more than that. Others argue that thanks to the pharmaceutical industry, we have development of new drugs and drug research creates a plethora of jobs. That is true, however, consumers believe that although, the pharmaceutical industry may provide drug medications that ensures the health of the public, it goes on to mention that the industry itself has its own self-interests rather than that of the public, especially to its consumers. Those include having staggering high drug prices and not focusing enough on patient’s needs.
We grow up in a world where we think and believe that the health industry cares about us and how they will do everything they possible can to ameliorate our health. Best believe that you're being deceived! Everything in this world revolves around money. Losing business would mean losing money and losing money would mean losing your job. Pharmaceutical industries have been raising the drug medications in order to compete in business with national pharmaceutical industries. High priced medications puts needed medicine out of reach for the patients. I remembered that one of my professors mentioned that one such example is tetracycline, which is a common antibiotic. The 500 mg capsule went from $0.05 to $8.58 which exceeds an increase of 17,000 percent!
Experts have concluded that the increase of the cost is overwhelming to patients and consumers. This means that it can be too expensive that their health insurance will not cover it. Not only that, but those who come from low-income families may stop purchasing their prescriptions prescribed by their doctors or they will take less of the needed medication. This means consumers health will deteriorate immensely. It is rather sad to see this happen because in reality, the pharmaceutical industry is worrying about their own interests and not that those of its consumers (patients).
