11 Things You'll Miss About Your Dog(s) While At School

Being back at school, I have realized how much I miss my unique and crazy K-9 friends back at home. They show an incredible amount of love and continue to be an insanely important part of my family as well as others. Good or bad, they can usually put a smile on most people’s faces day in and day out. These are ten things that I will miss while away at school that I don’t get to be annoyed about or enjoy on a daily basis:

1. The insane butt or whole-body-shaking you receive as soon as you walk in the door. This might be one of the cutest things that dogs do once you come home. The pure enjoyment that they show explains how much they love and care. It’s also ridiculous how much they cannot control it.

2. The love and kisses you are showered with. The constant showers of wet and slobbery kisses never stop even when you want it to stop. Dogs could care less about what type of mood you’re in, but they will always make sure to let you know when they are craving some attention.

3. That face your dog makes when they know they're in trouble. That face of "if I don’t look at them maybe they won’t notice me" tells all. My dog likes to chew up sandals and then run behind a wall after he’s caught and peek his head around to see if I’m mad or not.

4. The random energy your dog gets as soon as you decide to sit on the couch. Dogs tend to pick the worst moments to get hyper and excited, like right when you get a moment to relax and sit on the couch. Then all of a sudden, you are bombarded with kisses and tails in your face because they’re on a different level of excitement than you.

5. The pawing at your face in the morning when they want you to wake up. This is very much self-explanatory. Dogs run on their own schedules in the morning, and you can’t blame them for always waking up on the right side of the bed.

6. The so-called "live presents" your dogs like to present to you. The random small critters that dogs seem to think are toys or prizes that they present you with so that you’re proud of them. For example, a dog catches a critter, then you scream at him/her to drop it, and they just walk up to you wagging their tail and drop it at your feet.

7. The cuddling. Never unwarranted, everyone loves and knows the oversized lap dog that takes up the entire bed at night.

8. The dog breath. All dog breath is strange, except puppy breath, and everyone loves and needs puppy breath every once in a while.

9. The begging to play. Sometimes, they'll just drop a toy on your lap.

10. Puppy eyes. They are incredibly patient when there’s any type of food being offered. It’s amazing how much they listen when they want food.

11. The awkward sleeping configurations. The on the back, mouth open and tongue out position, or the head handing off the end of a couch upside down, or the sitting up completely slumped position. I have figured out dogs can sleep however and whenever they feel necessary.

If everyone showed the amount of selflessness and love that dogs show due to their nature, then this world would be that much better. Enjoy and spoil your pets because they have life figured out. Eat. Sleep. Love. Repeat.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
