I've always had to be in a certain mood to crave rap music. It has always been on the edge of my radar, so I never dedicate serious time to discover new artists.
Thankfully, David Andrew Burd AKA the anti-rapper AKA Lil Dicky came right to me.
I attended the Camp Bisco festival this summer in Scranton, PA. Operated by The Disco Biscuits, it is a paradise for jam bands and electronic beats. LD was on this year's lineup but I didn't notice. I had never seen the name before.
It wasn't until the morning of day two that our new friends made him their priority. Of course I agreed to catch the set.
When he walked on stage and made some cliché jokes I couldn't help but roll my eyes.
Bisco has a pretty dedicated attendance group. The festival itself recently relocated to the Montage Mountain water park venue, but its attendees are anything but newcomers. We know what we like, and rap next to rock jams seemed conflicting to me.
But it didn't take long before this self-derogatory Jewish rap prodigy completely changed my mind. He's one of us.
He savagely spits his pitch in the track Professional Rapper, explaining to a skeptical Snoop Dogg:
Nah, that's my niche!
Don't get offended by this, but that's the market y'all missed
That's the target I'll hit
And that's the heart of my pitch
I wanna do this whole thing different.
His lyrics range from saving money and having to attract girls with personality because he's small and hairy. I'm apparently one of many that love the creative flow of rap but not care about hoes in the Gucci store. It's hard to relate to Mclarens.
But really, nothing against more conventional rap. Most of my personal experiences involves artists being 30 minutes late, relying heavily on hype crews and recorded tracks, then abruptly cutting off sets and leaving. Mac Miller, Fetty Wap and others have disappointed me this summer.
LD did not disappoint, the performance was superb and Camp Bisco definitely suits his niche. He went from complete unknown to one of my favorite rap artists. He even brought one lucky fan on stage for several songs. She knew every word and impressed everyone.
That's really why he has earned my list, because his message is fun, inclusive and fresh.
Also, a Jewish MC called Lil Dicky. Anti-rapper indeed.
Currently on Spotify, he has one full album and several singles. I'm eagerly waiting for more in the future.
I've embedded my actual playlist here and it's growing all the time. Press play and enjoy.
