Pet Parent Probs

A fun piece inspired by my editor and friend!

If you have a pet, you know these things all too well! *sigh*

Watching the news can prove to be a lot tougher with a pet. Pets constantly want attention and sometimes wires can get crossed when you're watching your important news program first thing in the morning. How am I supposed to get my news this way? Seriously, “Bingo!?"

I literally just want a cup of coffee. That morning cup of joe can also be rather elusive when you're a puppy mom. A relaxing cup of coffee could potentially take away from their favorite place to sit—your lap!

Tech-Savvy

As a college student and a mom of two wonderful fur-kids, I can tell you that it's difficult to get any school work done because your pets love you, and they want to help you complete important tasks.

An Artist in the Family

While some dogs are tech-savvy, others can be quite the little artists! They like to get their paws dirty, and they'll often play with large amounts of paint as a way to bond with their art loving parents.

The Childhood Dream of a Dog Lover

While most people dreamed of being a hero in an action movie as a child, there are others who wanted puppies. If you were truly obsessed with puppies, you wanted to be in 101 Dalmatians. Your dream was to have an adorable elderly housekeeper with an English accent and marry a man whose ability to play the piano matched that of the amazing, Mr. Billy Joel. But, as an adult you've figured out that it would be very hard to keep THAT many dogs in a small London apartment. I mean, the food bill has to be outrageous and, paid regularly, couldn't possibly be easily managed on the meager salary of the average piano player. And, besides, that big lovely house in the English countryside is probably a hotbed for Paranormal Activity. Sleep well Anita and Roger. <3

Hushpuppies are NOT Puppies

Public service announcement: hushpuppies are not made from actual puppies—just in case anyone was wondering! I wanted to clear that one up for anyone out there who might be confused about what hushpuppies are. So, if you were thinking they're puppies, they're totally not. Hushpuppies are a food made from cornbread, which has been deep-fried. And, they're not made from those shoes everyone owned in the nineties, either.

Shoes are Chew Toys, Not Shoes

Speaking of nineties shoes, for some reason puppies and dogs in general enjoy chewing on old shoes. I don't know why that is, but I guess it's okay. If you have an old pair of shoes that you're thinking about throwing out, just let your dog sink its canines into them. And, also enjoy this cute picture of this puppy chewing on this shoe. It's too adorable. Am I right?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
