“Some days you are the bug and some days you are the windshield” -Anonymous.
Growing up, depending how you look at it, can be favorable or unfavorable, but it happens to us all. Since I was young, my parents instilled in me the concept of being able to stand strong on my own two feet. I transferred this concept of inner strength to the classroom, on the field, and all other activities that I tackled. Suddenly, when one of my legs was temporarily taken away, I was left to stand strong on only one foot.
Having reconstructive leg surgery has changed my outlook on life. At first, I felt vulnerable, unknowing of all the obstacles that would lie ahead of me. There are days where I feel like the bug, smashing hard against all the challenges that every day brings like the pain, not being able to go to the restroom on my own, but slowly as I regain more independence, I remember that I am the windshield, able to conquer the world.
Every day is truly a blessing and no matter what state of mind I am in, I remember how strong I have to be; I buckle in and am ready to drive straight to the road of recovery. I am able to stand on one good foot with the strength of two.
No matter what I am, the bug or the windshield, I keep reminding myself of the countless opportunities on the road ahead and the inner strength I possess, no matter how many feet there are to stand on. Finding this strength when I thought the surgery would deteriorate my high spirits makes me realize how I cannot wait to launch into the next journey in life.
I hope you too look forward with blessings and grace to all that will come.
