Now that it is summer time we can finally relax! While some people are just taking it easy and vacationing, some of us are looking for summer jobs to make a little bit of extra cash for the fall. Whether it is a high school kid needing gas money or college kids trying to save up for the semester, getting a summer job can be very beneficial.
One of the easiest and most common job options is to Lifeguard. After getting certified, the job options are usually limitless. If available, you could become a permanent lifeguard and a public pool or be a substitute lifeguard for when everyone else is not available. Either way, going through training and getting certified is very reasonable.
However, if you get the opportunity to work at a country club, I highly recommend it. Here are some perks of working for a country club:
1. You are living out your middle school "High School Musical" dreams.
Throwback to 2007 when we were all wishing we could hang out at a place half as cool as Sharpay's family resort. Well, now you can. If you have ever been to a country club or have been a part of one, you understand that you feel like you are living "high class." Why not work at the pool you grew up going to? The only thing better than being a part of the country club is getting paid by the country club.
2. Free golf cart rides.
Yep, you read that right. I'm not sure about most, but at the country club I work at, we get our own golf cart to drive across a parking lot. It is great. Whether you need to run back to the clubhouse really quick for a drink or want to cruise the course during the hot, slow season, your wish is the carts command. I mean who doesn't love driving a golf cart?
3. Tanning.
Some pools get to be chaotic, especially if there are younger kids in the neighborhood and they bring all of their friends, but for the most part from my experience, it doesn't stay slammed throughout the entire day. During the early morning or the last stretch of your closing shift, grab a book and layout while no one is there. Why go pay to tan when you can get paid to tan? You have to be there anyway, so you might as well take advantage of the sun.
4. Connections.
Country clubs have the reputation of having the "elite" citizens. While you might only be a lifeguard, you actually get to know the residents and members really well. They might bring their kids or grandkids to the pool during the weekends and holidays. Their wives might come out to get some sun and relax. They might even come jump in after playing a long, sweaty game of golf in the middle of the summer. Either way, you will see them and they will most likely get to know you. You never know when those connections might help you get into your dream sorority or land that perfect job. Knowing people is always a good thing, and getting to know people from all walks of life is even better.
5. Pool parties.
Remember how much fun it was going to a pool party for one of your classmates? Trying to do flips in the water, getting to cool off, and even getting to get a little bit of tan! Well, you might think being on the opposite side of the party would be a drag, but it doesn't always have to be.
Yes, you have to work and focus on everyone at the pool, but you usually get paid a lifeguard fee and can even get tipped for working so hard! Plus, a lot of times parents feel bad for the lifeguards because they just have to sit and watch all the fun that they even offer them food and drinks and even cake from the party, depending on the type of occasion. Who doesn't love high wages, tips, and free food from super nice people?
While this will be my fourth summer working for a country club, I can't say that all of them will be the same. However, I can imagine that my experience can't be that far off from other lifeguards at different country clubs. I absolutely love my job, so I highly recommend anyone else to do so as well.
