Perks Of Your Roommate Being Your Best Friend

It's so much more than who gets what side of the room.

Perks Of Your Roommate Being Your Best Friend

Going to college, I had no idea who I would room with. It's exciting and nerve-wracking trying to find the person you will be living with for the next year in a small room. My family had a history of not having a good freshman year roommate, but I was determined to have a different experience.

I met my roommate Alexis on the Lynchburg Class of 2020 Facebook Page. I instantly knew she was a perfect match for me when our first conversation was about our prom dresses. Three months into school, I can say we are closer to each other than anyone else and she is my best friend. Based on my first-semester experience, here are the perks of being best friends with your roommate.

1. Late night talks

My roommate and I often find ourselves laying in bed at night in complete darkness talking for hours. It is normal for us to say goodnight and then continue talking until 3:00 a.m. We can talk about anything from family to what we are going to wear the next day.

2. Two closets are better than one

If you're like me, you'll chose a roommate that is close to the same size. This is so nice on a daily basis. My roommate and I are so close we share almost everything. It's like having a second closet full of clothes for free.

3. It's like having a mom away from home

Many times I have had errands, doctor appointments and grocery store runs. My roommate is my immediate go to. When I need to go to the clinic, she immediately steps up and asks when we are going. She looks out for me, takes care of me when I'm sick, and will help clean. One time I was sick and almost fainted. Alexis immediately took me to the health center, wrote down the information from the nurses, told my teacher what was wrong and why I missed class. She did all of this while she was supposed to be in a class on her own.

4. Inside jokes

Nobody is going to know your habits better than the person you live with. The amount of good times, laughter and inside jokes made is extraordinary. Often, we will look at each other and say one word and bust out into laughter because of something that has previously happened.

5. Mind reading

Alexis and I can simply look at each other and know what the other is thinking. Nobody can read me as well as her, my sister, and my best friend.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
