To be honest, starting off as a Freshman at a completely new school in a place where you know absolutely no one seems scary at first. So of course, the idea of having a room mate is what reassures you that everything will be okay. You have a buddy that you can explore campus and meet new people with. Or even if you aren’t conjoined at the hip with your room mate, at the end of the day, you still have a bed side therapist you can share all of you new experiences with.
But, what they don’t tell you is how nice it is to live alone. Although it gets a little lonely sometimes, it’s never too bad. It’s nothing that a little bit of music and Netflix can’t fix! There are several ups to living alone. For example, cleaning your room isn’t always a number one priority. I get it, you’re a college student and you get into slumps. Waking up late and rushing out the door and leaving your mess behind is totally acceptable. Speaking of messes, you have twice the amount of room to sprawl out your clothes and books all over.
The physical aspects such as having more room to yourself if nice, but mentally, living alone is soothing too. As human beings, it’s safe to say that we all need some alone-time at the end of the day. It’s nice to kick back, relax, and have a little mental health time with yourself. Because at the end of the day, you are your own best company.
Now, lets get down to the best parts of living alone. In my opinion, living alone makes decorating at least a solid ten times easier. You no longer need to be worried if your comforter matches your room mates throw pillows. The stressors of who gets which dresser or which closet is no longer a problem because the answer is simple… you! You get both the dresser and closet space! Life is good.
Decorations are all yours, your whole room is personalized. As well as what’s in your fridge. I’ve learned the hard way that living with others can be difficult, especially when it comes to the fridge. Because some people might just eat sixty-dollars-worth of your groceries. And us broke college students can’t afford to be having that happen. The whole fridge thing is nice because one week, you could have shelves full of organic vegetables, while the next week you have three cans of Dr. Pepper.
Lastly, whats nice about living alone is the fact that you don’t always have to wear pants! Come on, we all know this is the best part. No one wants to be confined in tight denim jeans for any longer than they have to be. No pants is the best way to go! After a full day of classes, and several moments of stress and hair pulling, living alone never sounded better.
