Perks Of Being A Student Worker

Today there are many student workers throughout every campus in the world. A lot of people look at campus jobs and think it’s not worth the time. However, there are many positive perks of being a student worker.

1. Location is everything.

First off is the location. You’re already on campus, so this means a short distance to work. You can literally have class from 11:00 -12:20, and be to work at, 12:30. I’ve done it numerous times. This eliminates the rush and struggle of getting out of class and trying to drive across town to your job. If you catch a bad spot in traffic, this could delay you 30 - 40 minutes, easily. On campus, you might encounter some slow walkers, maintenance men, or the squirrels in the quad. Other than that, there’s not much to delay your journey to work. Another plus is that since you're not having to drive across town, or out of town for work, student workers definitely save more gas. You can literally get out of class, walk five minutes, and be at work.

2. Your boss works with your hours.

Since you have an on-campus job, your boss understands school comes first. With that being said, there is no stressing on whether to skip class or go to work. You also aren’t working long nights. Most on-campus jobs are done before 9 p.m. This enables you to go to class every day, go to work, and still have time for homework, studying, or extra-curricular activities.

3. You see new faces.

Another plus is that you get to meet a lot of people on campus. When you come to college it can be scary seeing all these unfamiliar faces. Well, when you’re a student worker, you come face-to-face with many other students daily. This will help you when you see those same students in the cafeteria, or in one of your classes. Having a familiar face around always helps.

4. Interaction with faculty.

Lastly, you get the chance to interact with the faculty members outside of the classroom. Just holding a friendly conversation with them every day can help you in the future. Who knows, one day you might have to take their class, and it would be great for them to already know you. Also for future jobs or internships, you may need numerous recommendation letters. So, having a college employer write one for you might look pretty impressive.

With that being said, if you’re in college you might want to consider working on-campus. It might not seem like a good job, but there are some great perks to it.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
