The Perks Of Having A Long-Distance Best Friend
Dianthe Fleming

It is inevitable in life that people move away from each other. It can be difficult living far from your best friend. You can no longer go out to eat on Friday nights or spontaneously go over to their house. Although you two are having the time of your lives while conquering the world, you still miss one of your favorite people everyday. You learn that the distance between you and your best friend is not as bad as you had previously thought.

1. Getting to see each other is a special event.

Sometimes when you see someone all the time, you take that person for granted. When you don't get to see one of your favorite friends often, the times you spend together are appreciated.

2. You always have someone to give unbiased advice.

This person knows you best. However, they do not know the people that you are talking about so they can give you better advice than anyone else.

3. You always have someone to text and FaceTime.

Although you may be miles apart, they are always a phone call away. You know they will always be there for you when they can't physically be there.

4. You can plan fun trips to visit each other.

When you can visit each other, you get to meet the people that you've heard all about. You also get to experience all the places that they love. Although it may seem like a hassle to leave town to visit your best friend, it's actually fun. You always have somewhere to go and someone to have fun with rather than be trapped in your city.

5. You know they will always be a part of your life.

If you can survive going to different schools in different states, that's proof that your friendship will last forever. You both care enough to make time for each other even with homework, exams, and social events.

6. You get to meet their friends and they get to meet your friends.

You automatically get to become friends with your best friend's friends. You are an honorary new best friend. Your best friend and her friends probably talk about you all of the time anyway.

7. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

This phrase is very common. Why would being away from someone make you closer to them? I never thought this was true until now. While you two are off in your different lives, you experience all different types of people. Getting to experience new people makes you appreciate the old ones.

8. You get to live vicariously through someone else's life.

You not only get to live your own life, but you get to live through your best friend too. From constant updates through snapchat and texts, you're basically living a double life.

9. You can go weeks or months without seeing each other, and it's the exact same.

You and your best friend are so close and comfortable with each other that time apart does not impact your relationship. Time away from each other feels like none.

10. Your friendship is more important than the miles separating you.

The distance means nothing because you have an inseparable bond. There is always some way to visit each other like car rides or plane rides. Nothing can end your friendship, not even a couple hundred miles.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
