There are so many perks to being a little Greekflower in a huge Greek garden that deserve to be recognized.
Unconditional love and support.
I've honestly never experienced so much love as I have since joining Alpha Phi; it can even be overwhelming at times. Constantly having someone there for you at the drop of a hat is amazing and something that is so nice to have during college when we can feel so lost at times. You literally have 150 people who will answer their phone if you call at 3 am.
Opportunities to hold leadership positions.
These look so great on a resume and teach you valuable skills to use in future jobs. I can tell you firsthand that I have gotten jobs because they were impressed with my experience holding a leadership position in my sorority.
An expanded wardrobe.
You have basically an unlimited selection of clothes, shoes, and accessories from all your sisters. If I need a dress for an event all I have to do is post in our Facebook group, and I instantly have a million responses. Not only that but you accumulate more bro tanks and crew-neck sweatshirts than you ever thought possible.
Networking and gaining a second family.
You meet a ridiculous amount of men, women, and alumni upon joining Greek life. Alumni can help you land jobs after graduating and provide you with opportunities you would never have had without joining Greek life. I've made so many lifelong friends that I owe one hundred percent to going Greek -- No joke, my sisters will all be at my wedding because they no longer feel like just friends, but my actual family.
It makes sure you check yourself before you wreck yourself.
College can get really crazy at times and without something to ground you... You can get a little out of hand. What I have learned from being in my sorority is that it grounds me and keeps me in check. We have GPA minimums we have to maintain, volunteer hours to do, philanthropies to participate in, among a plethora of other things. It teaches you how to work hard to play hard in terms of doing well in school while also going out on the weekends.
The list could honestly go on forever, but a few more honorable mentions...
- You have an excuse to buy obscene amounts of dresses and heels, telling yourself, "It's for Chapter." But you know what's even better than that? You have so many sisters who will own the "sweatpants, hair tied, chillin' with no makeup on" look publicly with you any day of the week.
- Study files -- Honestly how do people survive without these?
- Every time you post an Instagram picture, you are basically guaranteed 100 likes solely from your sisters.
- You quickly learn to love singing -- Regardless of whether or not you are good at it because singing sort of just tends to happen a lot when you are a Greek member.
