Perks of Adulthood

It's not all bad

Perks of Adulthood

Recently, I had a thought about how cool it is to be an adult. Yes, there's bills and a lot of responsibilities, but there are things that I realized being a kid didn't entail.

1. Having your own Netflix account

This is probably one of the first expenses that college students have and it's well worth it if you don't like having to search the internet for something to watch (which usually involves buffering due to WiFi connections). I finally got my own Netflix and it's awesome. I only pay $12 a month and it's mainly for watching TV shows. The movies on Netflix aren't that great (that doesn't mean there aren't some great ones, but it's kind of slim picking).

2. Listening to the music you want to listen to

Growing up, music is usually filtered due to parents' taste and preference in music. There's also censored versions of everything that's modern, which is also monitored in most cases. When you become an adult, you can listen to whatever you want.

3. Living on your own or with roommates

This is also a perk because you get to live how you want and make your own rules. Living on campus at Wingate was a great experience because it showed me that a lot of cleaning techniques that I was taught at home was permanently instilled in me.

4. College

Going to college helps you learn to be responsible and helps you realize that being on your own is worth the work.

5. Sex

I feel like this should be self-explanatory, for the most part. I know sex doesn't apply to everyone, but for those of us who it does apply to, there's no one there to tell you that you can't have sex with your consenting partner. You may do so at any time.

6. Attending weddings

This is one thing that will occur more often as you age. I've attended 3 weddings in the past 5 years, and there's a few more that will take place in the next few years. Growing up makes a lot of people long to spend time with someone, which is a great feeling.

7. Watching kid shows

This is where our kid-side truly shines through the adult-side. I watch cartoons all the time. I'm addicted to Spongebob.

8. Imparting wisdom (that doesn't come from anywhere)

Our wisdom doesn't really come from anywhere. It just seems to appear when certain situations arise.

9. Dressing yourself

Wear whatever the hell you want because you're old enough to make the decision to cover your ass or not.

10. Feeding yourself

This is one thing kids take for granted. When you get older, the home cooked meals stop and it's a lot of fast food during your 20's...until you learn to cook or just stop being lazy. There's also adult beverages that come with the food *wink wink*.

11. All da responsibility

It's a lot of responsibility, but it's ultimately worth it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
