I am 27 years old and like most women, I have been in search of new period products to try and see which one is more to my comfort. Then there is the guilt of environmental waste as well that is inherent in sanitary pads and tampons. One such product that has been very popular over social media is period underwear.

I wanted to give them a try myself to see what the hype was about. For this review, I bought three brands of period underpants - Ruby Love, Thinx, and Dear Kate Ada and here's my experience.

What is Period Underwear?

Period underwear, also known as menstrual underwear, is a type of undergarment designed to be worn during menstruation. It is an innovative alternative to traditional menstrual products such as pads or tampons.

Period underwear is specifically engineered to provide both absorbency and leak-proof protection, so it can be used as a standalone method for managing menstrual flow without the need for additional products.

Period underwear comes in different styles and absorbency levels to suit various needs and flow levels. Some are designed for light to moderate flow and can be used as backup protection along with other menstrual products, while others are suitable for heavy flow and can be worn alone for extended periods.

One of the main advantages of period underwear is its reusability. After each use, the underwear can be washed and dried, making them eco-friendly and cost-effective in the long run compared to disposable menstrual products. Many brands produce period underwear, and they often offer different sizes and designs to cater to individual preferences.

My Experience With Period Underwear

At first, I was apprehensive about trying out period underwear, but it has CHANGED my life. I was hesitant to try period underwear until I mustered the courage. I couldn't understand why they had gained such popularity, mainly because I didn't grasp how they functioned. I wondered if they would cause leaks around the edges or feel like wearing a diaper.

Additionally, I was unsure if I'd need to change them frequently throughout the day. However, I discovered that all those concerns were unfounded—provided you wear the appropriate absorbency level according to your flow. Furthermore, even when not menstruating, they can offer protection against incontinence and discharge.

Typically, most brands incorporate approximately three layers of absorbent material in the crotch area of the underwear, and some even extend it up to the back, creating a barrier that traps liquid and prevents it from seeping into your clothes.

It works similarly to how a pad keeps liquid contained. The special liquid-locking materials used in these underwear prevent blood from leaking out the sides and onto your legs. However, I did observe some instances of blood reaching the seams when I mistakenly chose the wrong absorbency level, though it required a significant amount of blood before reaching that point.

The period underwear brands that I tried did not feel bulky like a diaper. The pants were snug and there was no blood leakage through the edges. You can read about the different absorbency levels of brands.

Final Thoughts

My ultimate choice is Thinx period pants. They are the most effective option and have the greatest absorbency level, allowing me to wear them for 6-7 hours straight without any leaks. What I like the most about period underwear is that there is no insertion required as in the case of tampons and menstrual cups.

If you are looking for something other than pads, I would definitely recommend using period underpants as an alternative. These are super convenient. Just make sure to get 2-3 underwear, so you can wash them and alternate during your periods.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.
