If you’re a college student, chances are, you probably don’t have a pet at school, and unless it’s a service animal, your school probably doesn’t allow them either. While you could adopt a pet rock, or make do without a companion at all, I’ve recently come to realize that plants are a good proxy. Usually easier to take care of than an animal, plants are the perfect college “pet” to love and care for.
They require TLC, but not to the extent that an animal does.
Plants are a little bit easier to take care of than a dog or a cat, and a lot less expensive, too. For the most part, they just require a little watering here and there, and if you invest in a succulent, you end up really only watering it every other week or so. Most indoor plants can easily flourish without direct sunlight, too.
Plants can lower anxiety and decrease stress.
There have been a handful of studies that seem to show that plants can decrease anxiety and stress. Plants such as lavender, aloe vera, or snake plants can help with the removal of toxins, such as mold or other allergens, ultimately increasing your energy, cleaning the air you breathe, and helping create a better and healthier environment for you to thrive in. House plants can also help improve your mood and help you feel more calm.
They increase productivity.
Research has shown that just by having plants in the room you study or work in can increase your memory, concentration and more. Who knew that plants could be the secret to success in your college career?
Plants are natural humidifiers.
Having plants in your room can help with breathing, especially if you have a cold. Apart from increasing oxygen, plants are known to work similarly to a humidifier, increasing moisture in the air, and can ultimately help minimize toxins in the air through their natural filtration system.
Becoming a plant mom, or dad, is a life changing experience, and over time, you may start to notice a family of plants developing, and a love for life and the natural wonders it brings. These are normal feelings and bring out the best plant parent in us all. So, if you're looking for the perfect "pet" for your college dorm, apartment, or room, be sure to stop by your local gardening shop or nursery to adopt your new green friend.
