So you may or may not have heard that Pepsi has recently pulled one of their ads from the air.
Their ad featured Kendall Jenner, just getting off the runway (or some model-type job), joining a crowd of protesters, handing one of the policemen a Pepsi, and then having the crowd erupt into cheers right after. Here it is from YouTube:
So, I didn't think much of it at first, since the commercial was so slow at the beginning, but then I realized how this could be misinterpreted and seen as rude and ignorant.
1) To me, I felt like the commercial romanticized protests instead of showing the true nature of what SOME (keyword here) protests can be. Although, this would definitely be a sort of "ideal" protest where policemen and protesters alike are calm. I'd imagine that would be difficult, though, especially if you're fighting for something you believe in.
2) I don't know about you, but hearing about almost any protest now, I think about the Black Lives Matter movement, since there's been so much publicity (and also lack of it) and so much activity going on in the U.S. So it's sorta fishy to have a white woman come into the mix and then kind of "resolve" the movement in one quick motion of handing someone a can of soda.
Now, in no way am I trying to attack Kendall Jenner or Pepsi; I want to point out (and also make it clearer for myself) why this ad was removed and why it shouldn't have been released altogether. Of course, Pepsi must have had good intentions while creating and filming, but in my opinion, they just weren't translated all too well.
