There is just something about certain tunes that mean it is inevitable they will slither into your mind and set up shop on repeat for days on end. Most of these songs are upbeat and fast paced, with lyrics that leave the listener feeling great about either themselves or the world in general. Certain earworms fit this pattern, but their lyrics aren't always the most positive things on the planet. Here are fifteen fast paced songs with some less than inspirational lyrics.
1. Matchbox Twenty: "I'll Believe You When"
The poor singer of this song seems to have a history of making promises they can't keep to their significant other. The lighthearted tune and upbeat percussion mean that this song is a lively mismatch between melody and lyrical meaning.
2. Matchbox Twenty: "How Far We've Come"
Driving percussion and vocals that occasionally bring to mind rally chants make sure this song stays in the mind for days on end while the lead singer conjures images of a world that is crashing down around the listener.
3. Fall Out Boy: "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs"
Second verse is the same as the first as the beat is driven forward by percussion and guitar while the lead singer belts out what could be the words of a personal challenge to someone he knows or sinning and one night stands.
4. P!nk: "The King is Dead But the Queen is Alive"
The Queen of double meanings strikes yet again in this song that was released as a bonus track on the Japanese release of her album The Truth About Love. The occasionally humorous lyrics and anthem like feel ensure that this song stays with the listener long after the music has stopped.
5. Bowling For Soup: "High School Never Ends"
For some, high school encompassed the best years of their lives. For others, they couldn't wait to be rid of the place permanently. For this band, they realized that some high schoolers never leave that behavior behind.
6. Alexander Rybak: "Oah"
True love built upon stalking and coercion; what more could the average person want? This tale unfolds the beat of light drums and happy-go-lucky string instruments.
7. Panic! At The Disco: "Hurricane"
This song follows Panic! At The Disco's usual style of music which builds into a catchy chorus; the chorus just happens to be one large euphemism leading with "no more war, no more clothes."
8. Train: "50 Ways To Say Goodbye"
Train with a distinctive latin flair, much to the benefit of trumpet players everywhere. The benefit of memorizing this song is you won't ever have to tell your friends that your significant other left you; this song has multiple other, more fascinating, things to tell them instead.
9. My Chemical Romance: "Blood (Hidden Track)"
With the music not beginning until nearly a minute and a half into the three minute song, this tune is already bizarre. Then the lead goes on to sing about doctors helping a man with the same enthusiasm as a child singing ring around the rosie.
10. Mika: "Blame it on the Girls"
This song has a vibe that feels like it belongs in another era. The lead singer uses his peppy track to call out those people with terrible perspectives. Though he probably shouldn't be advocating shifting the blame to others.
11. Hollywood Undead: "Bullet"
Possibly the most disturbing song on this list, "Bullet" features an upbeat refrain about suicide. Complete with a child's voice talking about flying towards the end of the song, presumably following through with the sailing off a building motif throughout the song.
12. Boney M: "Rasputin"
Certain events in history aren't widely known. This song happens to detail the final weeks of Rasputin's involvement with the Romanov family. poisoning, shooting, adultery, if you can think of it then it's probably featured at some point in this late 70's pop tune.
13. Jaron and The Long Road to Love: "Pray for You"
Nothing more wholesome than saying a prayer for those that have come into your life, right? While the singer definitely took the preacher's advice, he may have misunderstood the man's intentions when he told the man to pray.
14. Sheppard: "Hold My Tongue"
As happy as any song could be, some of the words seem to imply the opposite. Biting back words would make it difficult to change anything.
15. Sheppard: "Let Me Down Easy"
Everybody loves a peppy beat strummed out on a guitar. It just happens to be rather incongruous when paired with the words of a man trying to figure out where his relationship went wrong.
These are just a handful of songs that I find upbeat but completely off the wall in the lyric department.
