A Pep Talk For Stressed-Out College Kids

Hey. Hey you. Yeah, you. You're awesome.

No--you're more than awesome. You are one hell of a human being, my friend. Don't act so surprised and please try not to deflect my compliments because deep down, I know you know you're incredible, too. I think we often forget just how amazing we are as human beings. Work, school, assignments, deadlines, family, friends, and just life in general sometimes seems to bog us down and make us forget how great we are. But I'm here to remind you that beneath all of that stress and worry of college, beneath all of that anxiety, is a strong, beautiful person.

So here's to the average college student just trying to pass their finals. I know it's hard to get out of bed in the morning after staying up way too late trying to finish your paper. I know all you want to do is curl into the fetal position on your bed and cry the stress away. But remember these times when you finally walk across the stage to grab the degree you worked so hard to earn. All of your hard work will pay off someday, but remember that no one except your amazing self helped you to reach that degree. So I'd say you're pretty damn amazing, and I hope you know that too.

Here's to the student who puts too much on their plate in order to please everyone. I know all those responsibilities are pulling you in a million different directions at once, and you probably want to rip all of your hair out, but remember that you were asked to do all of these activities because you're awesome at everything you do. People see the potential in you to do great things; it's important to see that potential in yourself, as well. But remember--do the things that truly bring you happiness in life. If you aren't living happily, then you aren't living at all.

Here's to the student who has no idea what they want to do with their life. I know there is a huge pressure weighing down on your shoulders telling you to pick a major, find an internship, and get a job straight out of college, and you're probably sitting there with a half-hearted interest in your major and a big question mark for the future. But remember that the type of degree doesn't make the job; it's the person who earned that degree that does. And don't be afraid to follow your heart--if you truly feel as if you belong in a certain major, then make the decision to switch. So whether you have a major that you love or that you aren't sure about, remember that at the end of the day, your degree will reflect all of the hard work and dedication you put in to earn it, and that certainly speaks more volumes than a measly piece of paper.

And here's to the rest of us college kids just trying to make it by, day after day. Finals suck, but that education you're earning doesn't. So take a deep breath, give yourself at least fifteen minutes a day to do something fun, and relax. You will make it big one day because you are amazing. You hear that?

You. Are. AMAZING.

Now get to work.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.

Obsessive Thoughts Keep My Brain Stuck On A Loop And Me Stuck On My Couch

Sometimes my brain just starts turning on an idea and it doesn't want to stop.

I don't know if it is related to my anxiety, perfectionism or depression. I don't know why it happens. It's frustrating, it's painful and it stops me from functioning.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.
