People Who Are Not Skittles

This nation is one that is built on immigrants and unless you are Native American, your ancestors came from somewhere else so future generations could have a better life.

Recent some bigots and racists decided to call Syrian refugees and immigrants "Skittles". Because a person who is not from your country is not a person, right? The answer is no because that's ignorant and hateful. To prove this, let's look at people who aren't from America but who definitely aren't Skittles.

Albert Einstein

Came to the US from Germany in 1933 as a refugee escaping Nazi Germany

Abdulfattah “John” Jandali

Came to the US from Syria in the 1950s and had a son named Steve Jobs.

Justin Bieber

Came to the US from Canada in around 2007 and unfortunately hasn't left

Madeleine Albright

Came to the US from Czechoslovakia in 1948 to escape Communism and became the first woman to serve as Secretary of State.

Abu Ammar and family

Came to the US in December from Syria following the bombing and death of his brother and family, his wife, and a feature on "Humans of New York". Read his story here.

Christopher and Mary Martin, John Alden, William and Alice Mullins, etc

Came to North America from England in 1620 and were the first of many waves of immigrants

Lupita Nyong'o

Came to the US from Kenya in the early 2000s to attend college and was born in Mexico.

Nikola Tesla

Came to the US from Croatia in 1884 to work for Thomas Edison

Bruckshaw Lees

Came to the US from England in 1901 and without my great-grandfather I would not be sitting here telling you about all these amazing people who happen to not be born in America.

This nation is one that is built on immigrants and unless you are Native American, your ancestors came from somewhere else so future generations could have a better life. That is what these new immigrants, these new people, are doing now for their children.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
