The fall semester is coming up quickly and everyone is packing for college and getting ready to start a new chapter. Getting ready to meet new people and live with someone you may have never expected meeting before. All the different kinds of people that you will meet come from all over the country and possibly the world. They will teach you all kinds of different things that can range from useful and just something that you couldn't imagine someone actually doing before. Here are a few things that you will learn from new people at college.

1. New terms

When you meet new people, you'll find out that something you once called a water fountain is called a bubbler in some states. Sometimes when you use the slang that you used when you were at home, you'll constantly be questioned why you say something or what it means. Obviously this goes both ways when talking.

2. New solutions

You could be dealing with a problem that you may never have dealt with before. But your new friend who has lived a completely different life than you may have gone through the same exact problem. They may know different ways and think of different points of view than you did before.

3. New food options

Being in a new state will be hard when you can't get that Papa Gino's pizza you're craving. But the upside is, you may find something that's even better than something you have at home. I know, you will always represent your home and the food that comes from it but give the food around you a chance.

4. New goals

Because of all the different ages, someone you know may have done something that you could only dream of or something that have never wanted to strive for before. Because everyone is different and at different points in their lives, they could give you an idea of what you could accomplish some day.

5. New activities

Due to different kinds of places in some states and countries, you could learn about something you've never thought of trying before. Instead of doing something like watching TV which you and everyone else does a lot, you could learn how to knit or go and dumpster dive.

6. New languages

While you may know a certain language from your old school, you may learn new words or sentences in a language you never have been able to speak before. Mostly, you'll learn curse words or something inappropriate because it's funny to learn how to say it in a new language.

7. New people you never would have guessed

When you get to college, you have to talk to a lot of people. There is something about these people that have aspects to them that you may have hated before with other people, but the people you may meet are different. You may have never considered being friends with some of these new people but with a new chapter, you'll meet new people who will teach you new life lessons.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
