People Do Care: Reminders When Anxiety Takes Over

This past week was a doozy. Nothing seemed to be going right and the world seemed to crash all around me. Lately, I have been trying to balance multiple responsibilities at once: School, work, and social connection. When life is hammering you with multiple responsibilities and it seems as though there is no way out of a situation there is something you should remember: People do care about you.

If there is one thing I have learned through talking with family and friends, it is that there are always people routing for you to succeed, even when there are people trying to tear you down. Always trust in your family and friends to be there for you in the midst of these hard times.

There is a verse that comes to mind; John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” These words get me through times where I feel as though life is moving too fast and there are many things to worry about.

When It comes to anxiety, the sense creeps up on you and won’t leave you alone. You feel as if you are being suffocated and dug in a hole and you can’t get out. You start to get inside your own head, and you start to imagine worse case scenarios that don’t help you. “You can’t control the world around you, but you can control the way you react to what life throws at you.” I’m not sure who said this quote, but I think that this a good reminder for when you are in times of worry.

During this time of worry, you must hold onto hope. The world is going to mess with you, and it is going to try to make you sway from what you are trying to accomplish in life. If there is one thing to remember, it is that you cannot do it alone. As much as we like to think we can do everything by ourselves without the help of others, it is impossible. There are always going to be people around you that are going to be there for you and will want you to do great in life.

The beginning of this week was awful. Life had brought me down and I was turning to desperate measures without thinking over situations. But there are steps that I did that helped me and will hopefully help you too.

Breathe

This may seem as though the simplest thing to do, but it does wonders. When you take a step back and look at the situation, take a breath and trying to focus in on one situation.

Talk to someone

The worst thing you can do during a time of anxiety is bottle everything in your mind. And if you are not confident enough to tell the people around you, write it down. Studies have shown that if you write down your thoughts, the easier it is for you to let it go.

Remember

Remember that people are there for you. Not everyone is out to get you. You are loved by many and should remember that always.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
