How Many People Have Actually Died By The Hands Of The Law In 2016?
Wordpress/One Average College Girl

Yet again in the news we hear of another unlawful murder of two black civilians by the police. The clear evidence of the overly aggressive murders of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile are disturbing, to say the least. Now I’m aware that these men had their own fair share of offenses; Sterling having a record of sex offenses and domestic abuse and Castile having a lengthy history of, wait for it, traffic violations. This wasn’t these men’s first confrontation with the law, but solely looking at the incidents that led to their death, these men were not a threat to the working officer. Now in no way are these two instances justification for the murders of the five officers in Dallas as a result of sniper attacks. But tell me why I see news outlets reporting stories with headlines like, “The Dallas sniper attack was the deadliest event for police since 9/11,” two events that are entirely different; however when it comes to #BlackLivesMatter, the criminal records of these two men are so quick to surface to distract people from the injustice. At the end of the day, the problem isn’t police vs. blacks, the police have killed many more people than just those who are black, we should mourn for all communities; the real problem is that people who are not equipped to handle guns have access to them; whether that be a police officer who is not trained properly for situations where the “offender”/ victim is carrying a weapon legally or a shooter who was not mentally stable enough to be permitted to carry a weapon. But since so many people want to distract themselves by focusing on the criminal history of the “offenders”/ victims of police brutality, let’s take a moment to actually visualize how many people have been murdered by the hands that swore to serve and protect us so far in 2016:

*Note: Some victims did engage in an altercation with the officer, most were wrongfully killed, all lives matter*

570. 570 fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, children, cousins, friends and family. 570 people that I learned about after typing each and every one of their names above. 570 people that had so much more to live for before their time was cut short. 570 people you may not have heard about prior to reading this article. Compare that to a report done by Officer Down Memorial Page that states in 2016, only 59 officers have died on duty; so tell me who has proven to be the real threat? While I understand that some of these victims were, in fact, threatening to officers, which lead to their death, we cannot deny that this number is way too high for just seven months into the year. The police are celebrated for their bravery, but it's nothing short of cowardice to abuse your power and kill anyone who may not fit your perfect definition of a suspect. Why must we hear people fight for the innocence of the victim after they have died and police always get to walk away, where is the logic in that? The issue of race has transpired into an issue of police vs. civilians, each trying to protect themselves from the other through the use of firearms. But how do cops expect people to respond peacefully when they are out here murdering our friends and family? Why did it have to get to this point? Why can mildly difficult situations only be settled by a fatal shot? Why are they so quick to shoot to kill? Why are there so many people on this list? The lives of our officers and our citizens are both important, but this isn't justice; you are breaking your oath to protect and serve by being the ones who pose the danger, instead of prevent it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
