People Are Wearing Safety Pins For a Powerful Reason
Think Progress

The days following the 2016 Presidential Election have been emotionally charged and frankly scary for citizens of America and the world. Unfortunately, our choice to put Mr. Trump in the highest office has spurred some ugly and hateful behavior that has threatened the safety of minority groups and women. Among some of the senseless acts of hate are racial slurs, public harassment, pro-Nazi graffiti and sexual assaults.

Reading some of these accounts will probably make you feel physically sick and even hopeless. It can make you feel like the good outweighs the bad in this world, or that all of the progress we’ve made as a human race is being ripped from our hands.

Because there is so much happening on a large scale, it is easy to feel like you are drowning in it and unable to make a difference. You may want to stand in solidarity with these groups, but are unsure of how to show your support.

Following Brexit, British people and immigrants faced similar harassment to what is currently being experienced in America. In response to these attacks, people began wearing a simple safety pin to demonstrate to others that they were a “safe” person or an ally.

For groups that are being targeted, public places can be scary. In crowded cities we are all strangers. Even populated places such as malls and grocery stores in suburban areas can pose a threat.

Americans have already started sharing their safety pins on social media, declaring their commitment to serving as an ally and making public places safer for those who have been put in danger following the election.

If this election has taught us anything, it's that fear is powerful. Fear is what motivated many people to vote for this man, and fear is fuel for hatred. In response to this election, we need to be stronger and realize that we can help people overcome fear. We can't be fearful at a time when so many people need our alliance and solidarity. Safety pins are a small reminder that we can all stand up to oppressors together and protect the rights and safety of everyone.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
