People Are Oceans

You can not know them by their surface.

People Are Oceans
Liz Tokarczyk

I once stumbled upon a quote that stated “people are like oceans you cannot know them by their surfaces” I believe this couldn’t be more accurate.

People are very much like oceans in many ways. For one just like the ocean a person appearance isn’t always, as it seems. As the ocean can look at peace from the shore the same peace may not be found below the calming laps of the waves. If you would dive deep enough below the surface you would encounter another world that would perhaps be more beautiful than the surface, but not quite as peaceful. The same goes for people; for some people, there are tsunami (fact: you can not tell that a tsunami is taking place beneath the waves, until it moves closer to the shoreline) moving below their surfaces that go unseen by many until they crash to shore leaving damages that can not be undone.

Just as you cannot define what is going on beneath the waves without the proper knowledge, you cannot define a person without truly knowing them. I mean truly know them, knowing a person favorite color or food is doesn’t count, those are surfaces facts about a person that can be picked up on. I am talking about knowing the of parts of a person that are below the surface they present, what are the reasons they can’t sleep at night, do the prefer sunrise or sunset, what is their biggest fear, the list of questions is infinite. However, perhaps the most important of questions is what are qualities that you bare that make them willing to reveal you all of this.
Like it or not we all fall victim to presenting a shallow version of ourselves to the world at some point or another. But why shouldn’t we when there are SO few of people that actually deserve to know the deeper parts of us? However, we do not realize in doing this we are hiding some of the best parts of ourselves. For just like the oceans tide conceals the beauty of their seashells, until it sees fit to reveal them, we should do the same with the parts of ourselves.

For we are like the seashells, some parts of us have become broken when we have crashed to shore, others have survived the wreckage. The broken shells are still extraordinary, and so are we. Some people will wait on the shoreline for the shells to surface, others happened to be staggering by at the opportune time, however, only a small number of both types of people will find beauty in the shells. The same goes for people, only few will be captivated by the deeper parts of you, some may not realize the beauty of it until it is too late and the tide pulls you back. Fear not, though, for the people who do not see the beauty in it never deserved to be revealed it.

For the ocean is marvelous, breathtaking, awe-inspiring and mysterious, it desires to be known on a deeper level, by the ones who do not have a fear of depths. So treat me like the ocean,

For If you have a fear of shallow living you would drown in the depths of my thoughts.

People are like oceans.

I am an ocean.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
