Many people call me and the rest of Nittanyville crazy - I call it dedication.
This past week, 667 Penn State students camped out from 11pm Monday, October 17 until 6am Saturday, October 22 to cheer the Nittany Lions at the White Out game from the front rows of the student section at Beaver Stadium.
Through the freezing nights, spontaneous rain showers and 78 degree days, each group of tents had at least one member preasent at all times of each day.
On Thursday night, the campers were evacuated due to inclimate weather and a threat of flooding. They were back bright and early Friday morning at 8.a.m to set up right where they left.
The White Out game is the biggest game of the year for Penn State and the fans. This year the Nittany Lions went head-to-head against No.2 Ohio State.
Saturday night, Penn State beat the undefeated Ohio State for the first time since the game on November 19, 2011. The win landed them a spot in the rankings (#24) for the first time since 2011 and knocked the Buckeyes down to #6, ruining their chances of a championship game.
When the clock ticked down to the final seconds, Penn State fans began jumping out of the stands to storm the field in celebration of the huge victory. Players were hugged and hoisted up above the crowd of over 107k fans. Tears were shed, as this is by far one of the most historical moments for the Nittany Lions.
The victory mayhem didn't stop there though. The students took to the streets of Beaver Avenue to form a riot of 5,000 to 10,000 people. Screaming Penn State chants until their voices gave out, some proceeded to tip over light posts, uproot signs, catch trees on fire and even support fans ontop of an air matress. Police soon stepped in with horses, pepper spray and riot shields to tame the crowd. Several arrest were also made. The crowd dispersed and the roads were cleared of distruction by 3 A.M. Sunday morning. An estimated $18,000 is damages were the after effect of the riot.
You could say Penn Staters had one hell of a weekend.
