It took 58 and a half minutes before game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals was untied.
Patric Hornqvist bounced a rebound off the back of Pekka Rinne to give a late lead to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Carl Hagelin then clinched the victory for the Pens with an empty-net goal.
With this win, the Penguins have won their fifth Stanley Cup tying them for sixth on the list for the most Cups won. They also won back-to-back championships for the first time since the 1997 Detroit Redwings. The Penguins also won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1991.
“This one was a grind, it’s been a battle,” Penguins GM Jim Rutherford said. “What I love about this group of players was that it was no excuses,” he said.
Both Rinne and Pittsburgh Goalie Matt Murray put on a show in front of the fans. Each made 27 saves, four or five that cause commentator Mike Emrick to ‘scoot’ toward the edge of his seat.
A controversial goal was overturned in the second period. After getting the puck past Matt Murray, Colton Scissors tipped the puck into the net but video review showed that the play was blow dead before the puck went in.
“It’s disappointing no question,” Predators Center Mike Fisher said, “but it was amazing to be a part of.”
This Stanley Cup Finals was the first in the history of the Nashville Predators. Defenseman P.K. Subban said that he can’t wait for next year, and assured that his team will be back in the hunt for the Stanley Cup.
