The Trump administration's first Black History Month is off to a rocky start with Vice President Mike Pence recognizing the kick off to the month by honoring... yes, a white man.
Black History month is a time to commemorate and celebrate black Americans, their contributions, achievements, and lives. Pence however, seemed to miss the memo, as he asked the American people to pay remembrance to Abraham Lincoln and the 13th amendment, which abolished slavery.
Now, there are a couple things wrong with this:
First off, Abraham Lincoln is white. Yes, there were white people who helped fight for equality for African Americans, but Black History month is time to recognize black Americans and their journey. The tweet does not mention the contributions of any African American.
Secondly, his mention of slavery. Is slavery really the only thing that came to mind when the Vice President thought of African American history? The Black experience does not begin nor end with slavery.
Needless to say, twitter users quickly called out the VP, asking him to become better acquainted with the accomplishments of black Americans. Black History month is time to honor black Americans in history.
