Grandparents are wonderful, and spending the holidays with them often leads to a few funny conversations. All too often those of us with young ears find ourselves quizzically looking at each other and echoing Bing Crosby when he sings,"Do You Hear What I Hear?"
Here are a few highlights from my family's time together.
Grandpa: "Are you Irish?"
A family friend in his eighties: "No, I'm not Amish, we raised corn and potatoes."
Grandma: "Potatoes are Irish!"
Grandpa: "These [oranges] are hard to peel because they're cold."
Grandma: "It's probably because they're cold, dear"
Grandpa: "What are you going to do this afternoon?"
Me: "I'm going to sit on the couch and crochet."
Grandpa: "Why are you sitting in shame?"
Me: "What type of movies do you like, Grandma?"
Grandma: "We'll be having dinner at 6 o'clock, honey."
It may us take a little longer to get our point across, but at least we have a few laughs along the way.
