The Queen of Butter and Down-South cooking is in hot water once again: Paula Deen tweeted a photo of her and her son dressed as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo from I Love Lucy. The picture shown below has sparked one very big controversy; her son, Bobby Deen, in brown-face. On her Facebook page it is explained that the picture is from a shooting from one of her shows. The picture has since been taken down, but not before comments were made. While her fans seemed to love the picture, most people weren’t as pleased, showcased by the amount of comments filled with disbelief.
Her first public incident happened just 2 years ago. She had said that she had used the N-word on multiple occasions. She admitted this in her recorded deposition where she also confessed to planning a slavery-themed wedding for her brother Bubba. The deposition that took place May 17 was dismissed by a Georgia judge, but not before her show and cookware line was pulled.
The slavery-themed wedding included a wait staff of all black, middle-aged men and women. Deen said that the staff were supposed to be from the civil war era and wore white jackets and black bowties. She offered an apology which can be seen here.
Deen was born in Georgia in the late 1940's. This era was thick with racism in the south. Although the region and era in which you were born is not an excuse for inappropriate behavior, it may be considered a correlational reason. The picture below shows a county by county depiction of where slaves were in 1860 and the level of racial resentment today. The statistics were taken from the US Census.
