If you are looking for a new show to watch on Netflix, I have a recommendation. "Patriot Act."

"Patriot Act" is Netflix's latest encroachment on replacing cable television as it is a stand-in for late night, stand-up comedy with new episodes being released each week. The episodes cover relevant topics being discussed in the news right now. Some of the shows so far have been on affirmative action, Saudi Arabia, and Amazon.

Hasan Minhaj is the comedian behind this show and his commentary seamlessly blends humor with valuable information leaving you feeling entertained while also being more informed about what is going on. The style and content of Minhaj's show shed light on just how crazy American politics and society have become. There is no parody involved in the show, just straight facts mixed with some eye-opening punch lines.

I came to appreciate the value of the show's content after watching the episode on Saudi Arabia. The episode came out shortly after the news of the American journalist who was killed in Saudi Arabia which has triggered conversations about the relationship between America and Saudi Arabia.

As is my typical behavior with news, I stay informed by glancing at headlines but I don't often read through the articles to learn more. You could say I am an eavesdropper on the news. But after watching this episode I learned more about relations between Saudi Arabia and America than I ever had before. I appreciated becoming informed on the entire situation, from the background on the situation to what is currently going on with the most recent events.

Now if the topic happens to come up over the holidays, I'll have something to contribute to the conversation.

One of the most appealing aspects of the show is Hasan Minhaj is a great host who creates appeal for a younger audience. We all know and love the current and past late-night hosts: Stephen Colbert, John Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, the list can go on. But Hasan Minhaj brings in a fresh perspective that can help draw in a younger and more diverse demographic into the late night comedy audience.

After the experience of seeing Minhaj in person and now after watching his show on Netflix, I really appreciate the new perspectives that he is able to bring given his background. These perspectives are ones that are currently lacking but slowly gaining traction.

So if you are looking for something to watch as you try to procrastinate your school work, avoid family while home, or something to download from Netflix to watch on a flight home, I would definitely recommend "Patriot Act" by Hasan Minhaj. Plus then, as a result, you'll come away more informed about current events and have something to say during those boring dinner conversations when you're back home.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
