Choosing a major to pursue in college is probably one of the most confusing and stressful things in the world. It also may feel like a life or death situation. As a senior in college I'm here to tell you that it's not. The fact that we're expected to know exactly what we want to do right out of high school is a little ridiculous, in my opinion. We just spent our life up to that point, taking general classes that we were forced to, that doesn't really encourages us to find our passion.
A lot of us find ourselves stuck between choosing a major that we really enjoy, and a major that we know we will find a good job in, and make a lot of money. A dear friend of our family, my aunt's sister, once told me," close your eyes and picture your childhood self sitting cross legged on the floor, what job would she want to do when she gets older?", and that is what you should pursue.
I really do believe that each one of us has a calling, and whatever way we get to it, is completely okay. Some of us go through four years of schooling to realize what we actually want to do. Don't settle. Don't ever feel like you're stuck. I never did things things the easy way, I also took the long path, and that is okay. I didn't do this on purpose it's just that I learn from my mistakes. This has built my character, and it made me realize that everyone gets to where they need to be in their own timing.
When you're frustrated with how long it is taking you to reach a goal, just take a deep breath and realize that there is a reason that it is taking you a little longer. Don't compare. I used to look around the room and put myself down when I realized there were people around me who knew exactly what they want to do with their life. That's amazing and I'm so happy for them, but for me it was't that simple.
I also know that some people do not end up at jobs that are happy at. I learned this from some adults in my life, but I want to wake up every morning excited to start my day, and motivated to get my work done. I want to drive to work every day with a spark inside me, and I want to be excited to get started.
I believe that not much compares to realizing your passion. Right now you might be confused and scared, and even angry that things aren't happening for you, but they will. If you continue to work hard and keep searching for that thing that sparks your mind, you will get there, and a million reasons why you need to pursue this will come to mind. Stay focused, stay gracious and it will come.
