Finding My Path

Feeling lost helped me find my true passion

Finding My Path

Ever since I was a little girl I remember waking up on Saturday mornings, and instead of watching cartoons like any other child, I was sitting around the television with my mom, dad, and two brothers watching whatever home improvement show was on HGTV. Among many, our favorites were: Bath Crashers, Yard Crashers, Property Brothers and Love It Or List It.

When I was around 12 or 13 I had my mind strongly set on going to college to become an Interior Designer. I had a good eye for color, pattern, coordination, and thought I could renovate any room with the right tools thanks to HGTV.

I had dreams of all the houses I would get to design, and the celebrities that would contact me by name to work on their houses.

But shortly after entering college I learned this dream was not what I wanted anymore.

I had chosen to attend Central Michigan University because they offered one of the best Interior Design programs in Michigan.

My first semester, freshman year of college, I was enrolled in an Interior Design Drafting class, and Drawing 101. While I had enjoyed most of what the courses had offered, it was not what I saw myself doing 10-20 years in the future.

So there I was my second semester of college, with absolutely no clue what my major was going to be, and what my future would hold.

I then found myself as one of those students trying to find out where they would soon belong in the real-world, and I have to say it was one of the scariest feelings I have ever felt.

Thankfully I've always had a passion and interest for magazines and pop culture. Scanning every magazine cover as I got into the checkout line at the grocery store to see what the latest scandal in Hollywood was, to dedicating every weekday night from 7-8 P.M. to watching E! News to get the inside scoop on my favorite celebrities.

Next thing I know I'm signed up for a couple of Journalism classes and exploring whether this is really where I would see myself in the future. And let me say thank the Lord it was!

I was also lucky enough to attend a school that has an EXCELLENT Journalism program.

While I was never the kid that enjoyed writing stories in their free time, I knew that if it was a topic I was passionate about the possibilities in my writing potential was endless.

I now have dreams about one day working for a magazine as an editor, or working for my favorite Entertainment Network, E! News.

I was once so determined to become an Interior Designer, I almost lost sight of what I really should be doing, in hopes of not being lost. But now I feel more found than ever.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
