The Parts Of High School That Everyone Misses

You don't realize you'll miss them until you're gone.

The Parts Of High School That Everyone Misses

A little over a year ago, I walked across the stage at my high school graduation and have never been happier. I had been waiting since the summer before my senior year for that day and could not imagine ever wanting to spend another day in high school.

Not wanting to spend another day going to the same, mundane classes that felt useless; not wanting to spend day after day with the same people and listen to the same drama; and not wanting to spend another day as a 17-year-old who still had to ask permission to use the restroom. This way of thinking was only furthered by having the most amazing first year of college imaginable. I remember coming home at Christmas and hearing people talk about missing high school and thinking, "How could anyone miss high school after going off to college?” Even after a full year of sleepless nights spent in the library and a complete lack of funds for weeks on end, I was still completely sold on the fact that I would never miss high school.

It wasn’t until I spent time with my best friend’s little sister and her friends who had just finished their first year of high school that I started remembering what it was like to be so excited about it. They have so many plans for the years ahead and are so ready to be sophomores in high school. Their freshman year of high school to them was exactly how my freshman year of college was to me; and it got me thinking about all of the things in high school that I feel are okay to miss.

1. Seeing your best friends every day.

2. Taking the easiest classes.

3. Having the best lunch table in the room with all of your friends.

4. Getting to have personal relationships with teachers and coaches.

5. Never having to study for tests.

6. Getting to eat at all your favorite places at home with your friends after school.

7. Being able to miss days of school and not feel like you missed the entire semester.

8. Spending time at your best friend's house with their family.

9. Not feeling like you have to plan out your entire life by next week.

10. HOMECOMING (greatest week of the year)!

My freshman year of college was the greatest year of my life, hands down. However, to all of the people still in high school and those who think they don't miss it, I think everyone should appreciate the parts of high school you'll never have in your life again. Don't underestimate the fun times you experience in high school, don't rush to leave, and appreciate the small stuff.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
