If you haven’t read Part 1, here it is.
Brock Turner is a rapist and a liar.
Brock Turner is a rapist and a liar.
Brock Turner is a rapist and a liar. Yet, he was released from jail 2,100 days earlier than his original (already significantly shortened) prison sentence given by the State of California. Are you mad?
Brock Turner denied having non-consensual sexual intercourse with the victim, and in fact stated that she “liked it.” Are you mad yet?
Brock Turner forced himself inside an unconscious, intoxicated woman behind a dumpster of a frat house, and then testified that he did no such thing. Are you mad yet?
You should be.
My first article on this topic was clearly taking on a different attitude towards Turner’s early release, which is what I intended. After all, most news articles are simply stating the problem and telling us what we should be upset about, which inspired me to show that good things come from bad situations which is most definitely the case with Brock Turner, Judge Persky and the government. I intended to show my readers that, yes, there was an extreme injustice in our court system, but the changes that it brought about are to be celebrated and supported.
Now that we have established the benefits of his early release, let’s discuss the drawbacks:
- Our justice system has failed us. We fear the insufficiency of the government to protect us and our rights after being sexually harassed more than we fear the sexual harassment itself.
- Turner has single handedly affirmed that Rape Culture is still very alive in America. He tried to convince the world that his victim consented, regardless of the fact that she was unconscious and intoxicated, and that she had injuries consistent with rape.
- Turner’s family is defending his actions. His father was quoted as saying it was only “twenty minutes of action,” as if the length of time somehow cancels out the severity of his son's actions. Turner's family is actively enabling him to believe the lies he is telling, and to not take responsibility of his own crime.
- “Brock Turner is a walking trashcan that deserves what he should have gotten in prison.” –Hudson Knox, sophomore at Point Loma Nazarene University.
My friends, we are witnessing history being made. Yes, our justice system is beyond corrupted, but this court case has brought these problems to the attention of millions of people. The progress we have already made will continue to snowball until the leaders of our country hear our plea for justice and are forced to take the serious actions we have been demanding for so long.
